Homeless; Lesly Perez

Welcome to the ART 3170 blog created as part of the civic engagement requirement
of this course. In this blog, students will identify a major social issue that affects
them and their communities. After conducting brief research on the issue and
sharing their personal feelings, students will locate members of their communities
who are also affected by the same social issue.

Civic Engagement:

Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and
developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference.
It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political
processes.
Civic engagement, broad set of practices and attitudes of involvement in social
and political life that converge to increase the health of a democratic society.

Homeless:
Homelessness is an important issue that leaves a significant impact on a community.
According to Los Angeles Times ,“Central Los Angeles recorded the largest numerical
increase of 3,500 homeless”. Meaning there has been a increase in the last six years.
There has been a shortage with housing and programs that are provided for homeless
people. Due to the shortage of resources many are living in their cars, tents, and sometimes
just cardboards covering them. This is causing that many live in unsanitary and unhealthy
environment. “Homeless individuals report poorer health (37% versus 21% for poor housed
adults), and are more likely to have life-threatening contagious diseases such as tuberculosis
and HIV/AIDS”.  In order to fix this issue voters have agreed to tax themselves. By voting
yes in measure HHH there are building houses for homeless people. Which will help all those
that have been waiting for services.

My life experience:

Growing up as a child, my mom, my sister and I would take the bus as a method
of transportation. A lot of the times when taking the bus it would be to downtown, either
going for a doctor’s visit or buying clothes from the Alley. As we would roam the streets of
downtown, we would always see a homeless person asking for food or money. My mom
will often ignore them and would hurry us to walk to avoid having any conversation with
the individual. I realized as I got older that this issue is heartbreaking and people often
ignore the issue to not deal with it. However, it is an issue that it is in the community and in
the city where one lives in and should opt to make a difference. Throughout the years the
issue has become bigger and you start seeing it not just in downtown but closer to home.
As a community, we should start looking at our surroundings and finding a solution to
homelessness. Only this way, as a community we will be able to make the significant
change to improve and better the lives of the homeless individuals in my community.

Reflection:

“As a child I would often see homeless people asking for food or money but as usual
one would turn them down and not give them anything. This has become the norm in
my community and it is unfortunate that we do nothing about the issue. Due to us ignoring
the issue, the problem has become bigger and the numbers of homeless people have
expanded throughout the years. Homeless people are often more seen around freeways
where they have created innovative homes for their choosing of lifestyle.”

“Our community needs to start helping homeless people instead of ignoring them”.

“Due to the lack of education people think all homeless are there because they want to be homeless
or they are just lazy. Which it isn’t always the case.”
