Gun control? by Aaron Chan

Introduction

Since terrorism attack and mass shooting on the campus happen often in recent years, gun control has brought up to social media and public again. Firearms is a subculture to the United States.

Personal

Gun control policy is important to me not because I support gun policy, but I believe guns represented revolution and freedom. I came from a gun controlled country which most of my people think no freedom. my home country was banned all the firearms from the 1960s, and then the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution has begun. Then, Tiananmen Incident happened in the 1980s.  Both incidents have led over millions of people died, which most of them are students and educational scholars. Those people were peaceful walk without weapons, however, because of this reason, they could not able to protect them and against the dictator and his government. Those events cause the huge immigration movement in the 1980s, most of my people can't stand the dictator and tried to find a way to escape to look for their freedom, many came to the United States and few went to other countries; that is the second wave of immigration movement in my country's history.

Reason

I came from the Hong Kong which is part of China, but China government could not direct control.( think about state government and federal government, it is very unique in China.)I know the importance of freedom. Especially I joined the United States Armed forces. I am so believing in United States constitutions. I am believing that firearms are just a tool, it could use for the kill, or protect. The recent incidents make people panic around the U.S, gun control has brought back to the public discussion. I do agree with gun control, but it has to be effective. according to law.com, " In America, there are an estimated 250-280 million firearms. Out of these, it is of course impossible to tell how many are illegal weapons, as the very nature of a weapon being illegal would preclude its registration to the current owner or wielder." which says, even though if we able to control legal weapon, still, there are many illegal or unregistered firearms in the community. without effective take out bad people firearms or illegal unregistered firearms, gun control for legal firearms would not be useful. I personally do not own firearms, and I do not like guns; However, I know California is one of the states with heavy gun laws, still, bad people still able to access firearms for crimes. Furthermore, legally carry firearms may able to reduce crimes.

Research

In Kovandzic and Marvell studies(2003), RTC ( Right to Carry) law is a more likely reduction in violence rates by raising the expected costs of committing crimes, due to criminals anticipating greater risks of injury and lower rates of success. Also, their studies say RTC laws might reduce violence rates by increasing the citizen obtaining and carrying concealed handguns in public.

Community Affected

This is the interviews about what is community thought about firearms.

Wu
U.S. military veteran

Wu: Since the law enforcement is not always able to arrive at the crime scene before the crime occurs, By having a gun, we can protect our lives before the law enforcement arrives. Also, the second amendment gives us the right to bear arm. It shows that the United States government trusts us. Unlike those dictatorships, the United States of America has the most democracy on the earth. Firearms can also an efficient way to prevent the government turns against the people. By our given rights, if the government becomes too powerful that, it has a potential hazard of being tyranny. If people don’t have firearms, only the government has, then the people will be slavery by the tyranny government.

Tim
Student

Tim: Gun-control on the federal level is necessary. The background check process should be applied on all the states in American to make sure criminals and people with mental problems are unable to own a firearm. The background check is an efficient way to remove the potential danger of mass shooting. However, some State’s regulations are useless and ridiculous. The classification of so-called “Assault weapon” and so-called “ featureless” are making nonsense for regulating firearms, and those type of state regulations will not really help the society to reduce the rate of gun crimes. Those regulations are not fair for any of the free nations. All the healthy breve citizens should have the right to either open carry or conceal carry their firearms at any of the public areas. The federal government should pay attention to the process of purchasing a firearm but not creating those ridiculous Gun’s regulation to force gun owners to spend more money on make their guns “legal”.
