This social issue directly affects me because coming from a Latino background, I grew up playing soccer for 12 years along with my two younger siblings. My dad is a big fanatic about the sport and we grew up playing the sport 5-6 days out of the week. We would consistently have practices, skill trainings and above all lots of games and tournaments on the weekend.

However growing up and playing at school, boys my age and now to this day they seem to underestimate females playing the sport. They find us too feminine and not equipped to play. Currently, I'm taking a outdoor soccer class with my boyfriend and in our class on average there are about 30 students. From that class there are only 5 females that participate in this class and the rest of the students are males. This just shows how low the number of females that are participating in this class.

In my research, I found articles that addressed this social issue and highlighted how females come up against a lot of challenges. A quote the Brazilian football legend said and really related to what I went through in my first years of playing the sport, " It was just me, a girl in the middle of a lot of boys". Thus, I have encountered that feeling and know what it is like to be in a male-dominated environment. According to Target Latino, many young females share their stories about the many obstacles they face in playing sports. They explain what issues they face when they play the same sport along side a male counterpart.

Yesenia Bobadilla
"My senior year playing on the Varsity Girls Soccer team, my experience was tough because I was discriminated for being a female of color and did not receive the same amount of playing time like my other teammates."

Daileen Perez

"As a Latina, I felt I never got the opportunities my college buddies would get in high school for playing sports."

Lyla Matar

"It was always hard playing and not getting fully appreciated for playing because I am a female".

Lastly, I chose to share this issue because I feel it is still a current issue not only in soccer but in many other sports. I feel women should get more appreciation and more opportunity to shine in this sport and more respect.
