According to Arboreda-Florez and Sartorius (2008), there is a common perception of mentally ill persons, which is that they are dangerous, violent, and unpredictable. It is often believed that those persons belong in a Mental Institution. However, that is not the case for every mental illness. Mental Illness includes anxiety and panic attacks, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, and psychosis. These are all mental illness that affect people everyday. These disorders are unpredictable and can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, and every other social construct you can think of. Nonetheless, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, mental illnesses are common and nearly one in five adults in the United States lives with a mental illness. About 50 percent of mental illness begin by age 14 and about three quarters begin by age 24. Mental illnesses do not occur overnight, most of the time the family and friends of those individuals notice changes and feel like something is going on.
I believe that is it important to know how prevalent mental illnesses are. This knowledge can give people awareness that these are real conditions and can be treated. It is important for people to know that it is okay to have a mental illness and that there are many others in the same situation. Those individuals should know that there is nothing to be ashamed about. On the contrary, individuals should speak and share their experience and possibly in the process help someone who is going though the same thing. I think it is important to talk about mental illnesses because they can be very dangerous without the proper support from professionals or relatives. Mood changes may seem as a usual thing and think that it happens to everyone. However, when you add withdraw, apathy, and problems thinking may lead to a prolonged depression. If that depression isn't overcome, that may cause more serious effect in a person such as suicide thoughts or intent, and even thoughts of hurting others. Every time I hear about someone's death or someone committing suicide I think about why individuals commit such act and why didn't anyone notice that the person needed support and acknowledgment. With this these pictures I intend for those people who are currently having issues with mental illnesses to know that there is help out there and that they can get through this rough patch.
