Foster/Orphan Care
Many people know about orphans throughout the country, but never take time to look in their own backyards. Los Angeles has a serious fatherless problem. According to Alliance for Children Rights, "28,000 children are currently in foster care in Los Angeles County." Those 28,000 children are from days old to 17 years old, are put in the foster care system due to abuse and neglected. According to LA Times," Older children who can't be quickly placed in foster homes typically are sent to a conference room in a high-rise building south of downtown Los Angeles, where they sleep on the floor or cots, according to social workers staffing the facility." Many of these children don't have a stable household. They are moved from their living situations every couple of weeks to months. Due to not having a stable household they don't received the proper education. According to Alliance, "By grade 11, only 20% of students in foster care are proficient in English. Only 5% are proficient in math. 75% of students in foster care are performing below grade level. By third grade 80% have had to repeat a grade."
Why it matters to me
Oprhan foster care is a very important matter to me because I have had some training in foster counseling, provided by my church. I understand the ramifications of these children growing up in these inhumane conditions. Without any affection, care, or protection that a father and mother are supposed to provide, how are these children going to learn to love. It is truly heartbreaking.
I have my own personal experience with the foster/orphan care. My dearest aunt and uncle have become foster parents for their nephew and niece. Their nephew and niece are young kids, ages 2 and 10. Their parents no longer have parental rights towards these children. Instead of these children being moved around from foster home to foster home my family stepped in for these children. My aunt and uncle have two kids of their own, ages 5 and 9. Not all the kids get along with each other. The 10 year old boy has anger issues, thinks everyone hates him, and can't get along with others because his parents didn't provide him with love and affection. The two year old doesn't know how to speak, she stills mumbles because she wasn't properly cared for. This two kids are great examples of why we should pro orphan care. We should provided our voice for neglected children and give them the attention they need.
