Alejandra Ascencio :Bullying

What is Bullying?

Bullying is undesirable , aggressive behavior that someone can cause another person by either words or actions . Acts of bullying can be physical , verbal , and cyber bullying. According to The world's Authority on Bullying No Bullying  it states ,"These situations have serious implications for both the child being bullied and the bully and may result in one or both having serious and lasting emotional or physical problems." Research and Personal

Bullying is a major social issue within my community. According to Simple Acts of Care and Kindness it states that , "Nationally, an estimated 160,000 children miss school every day because of bullying. " Also , while searching furthermore into bullying I came across that only about 20 to 30% of students who are bullied notify adults about the bullying .Working with children in my community has provided me a sense of how bullying occurs and demonstrating what I research is actually truth. I decided to hand out a survey with questions about if  children in my classroom have been bullied before and 80% of them responded yes , but they also responded that they do not tell an adult because they are either afraid or the adult they tell do not do anything to help them. In the article , Stop bulling it  states ,"70.4% of school staff have seen bullying. 62% witnessed bullying two or more times in the last month and 41% witness bullying once a week or more. " School staff witness bullying the most because most of the bullying happens during school time. That is why I want to raise awareness to parents , school staff and any person who is around children to make sure to watch over the children well and if they see a child being bullied to put a stop and educate them why is not okay to bully people.

Interviews :

Angela DelRio attends Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School in the city of Compton California .She is currently a fifth grader and I asked her three questions about bullying and this was her respond.
1. In School , what type of bullying have you witness?
I have witnessed verbal bullying and physical bullying.
2. Have you done something to stop bullying?
Yes, I have said to the bully to STOP! , and question them , why are you being a bullying? Don't be a bully be a friend.
3. What do you have to say about bullying?
I can say that bullying is just a way for people to express their feelings, but if something is happening talk to someone . For the people who are being bullied , Don't stay quiet ! So when someone bullies you most of the time it is not you fault , they just want to bring their anger or sadness out.

Marissa Carrillo also attends  the school Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School. Marissa is a fourth grader and her respond to the questions were this.
1. In school what type of bullying have you witness?
I have witnessed physical bullying .
2. Have you done something to stop bulling ?
Yes, I have told the teacher.
3.What do you have to say about bullying ?
I have to say that it is sad and mean. If you get bullied don't put up with it , stand up for yourself.

Mary Sagla works for Kennedy Elementary school as the librarian during the day and in afternoon  as a  program leader. Working all day with children she is able to witness different types of bullying but she states ," From all the years working in this school what I mostly witness is verbal bullying and Physical , when children are around me they know better not to disrespect anyone in any way, we treat everyone equal and this is a no bully zone." She also stated , "Parents should be more aware of their children behavior. I would suggest to the district to have counselors hold classes for parents to participate so they could see the signs of their child is being bullied. Have someone who has been bullied as a child to speak to the parents so they can share their experiences. I believe that would be an open door for the parents also to share.
