Effects Of Anxiety On People

  Anxiety and Its Effects

After doing some research on the effects of anxiety on someone’s life, I came across some interesting facts and statements.  According to Delfino, Henker, Jamner, Whalen, they state that many of today’s teenagers carry worries that are based on everyday concerns which include self-esteem, health, and even their performance in school (660). It is a very common issue today to see or diagnose young people with anxiety. Anxiety can come in stages, and the first stage can be marked distress and the interference with social and academic learning in a person. Anxiety can then at times move into the development of depressive disorders. Anxiety and Depression together can create a more severe case of depression rather than just having one. Anxiety can have good effects on someone to an extent. It can motivate people and help them prepare and protect themselves from dangerous situations or threats. Anxiety can become excessive and/or chronic and this is when it becomes a big problem (Delfino, Henker, Jamner, Whalen 660, 661). According to Harvard Medical School, persistent anxiety can take big effects on a person’s mental and physical health (2017). It's stated that over two-thirds of the estimated 40 million adults that have anxiety disorders are women (Harvard Medical School 2017). It is also stated that anxiety can increase the risk of heart disease, chronic respiratory disorders, and gastrointestinal conditions. Anxiety can make these things harder to treat, worsen their symptoms, and in some cases the people die sooner (Harvard Medical School 2017).

Why I Chose Anxiety

My name is Manuel Velazquez and the social issue I have chosen is anxiety. The reason I chose this is that it’s an issue that is sometimes not taken as important or normal. It can have a big effect on people’s daily life and their enjoyment of life. I have heard of thousands of people who suffer from different levels and types of anxiety. Anxiety can lead on to other serious mental and physical issues such as depression, heart problems, and even breathing problems if the person is prone to panic attacks. I myself suffer from ongoing daily anxiety and OCD which is another reason why I want to choose to discuss this topic. I want people that suffer from anxiety to know that they aren't alone in this issue. That they can be happy again, it is not easy and will usually require seeking help, but it is possible. Anxiety to me is a serious issue because it has made a big change in my life and has come between the enjoyment of life, myself and others who suffer from it.

Words From the Community on Their Experiences With Anxiety

Name: Peter Zuniga

Peter Zuniga claims that he has experienced and experiences anxiety. His first ever experience that he recalls was during his high school years. He said that he was a procrastinator. He had a lot of projects assigned during his sophomore year in high school and waited until the very last minute to do them. He claimed to feel pressured, sad and cried at moments due to how much anxiety and pressure he felt. Today, when there's a lot of things that he needs to get done he feels the anxiety and the pressure buildup inside him. When this happens he feels helpless and feels the urge to cry his frustrations out. He also claimed that his mom too goes through anxiety. The go through very similar anxiety, but she also experiences panic attacks and has trouble breathing when it's really severe.

Name: Carlos Calderon

Carlos Calderon claims to have felt some sort of anxiety due to school and work-related situations. He recalls his first time being recently on the twenty-ninth of October in the year twenty-seventeen. He experienced some anxiety and stress at his workplace. He works as a manager at an Autozone. There was a lot that needed to be done at work but he did not have enough workers. It was just one other sales associate and him in the store. Today, he claims that a lot of his feelings of anxiety and stress comes from school work, but mainly from his job. He is a college student also and sometimes at school he feels like he needs to get things done as soon as possible because of lack of time. Although he has had some anxiety-related experiences, he does not know anyone else who has anxiety off the top of his head.

Name: Veronica Gonzalez

Veronica Gonzalez claims that she has felt anxiety multiple times in her life. She states that it even affects her day today. The reason is that she says it makes her feel scared to have to go through episodes of anxiety all over again. She says that its an awful and overwhelming feeling. She sometimes feels anxious at night and begins to overthink things like life situations going on in her life, and things that need to get paid and done. She recalls her first experience with anxiety being sometime in the year twenty-thirteen. During this year she lost the place she lived and was forced to move elsewhere and also lost her job as a manager at some apartments. She states that anxiety seems like its something common today,  and that she knows a few people that go through anxiety but preferred not say who they were.
