Mental Health awarness

Mental Health awareness

Mental Health cannot be identified on the surface, mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental health awareness needs to be discussed more often to ensure people understand they are not alone, many fail to seek help because they are scared to acknowledge the situation. According to a Mental Health Stigma research by Drs. Thomas Ungar and Rivian Weinerman, “stigma is one of the major barriers preventing people from seeking help” which is unfortunate to think about considering these people who are affected may be among our community. There are many myths that surround having mental problems, which subsequently makes it easier for people to be in denial. The fact is, if people don’t receive help at early stages it can only lead to worse situations. According to the Mental Health government website many “biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry, life experiences, such as trauma or abuse, family history of mental health problems” contribute to why people have mental problems, to add on to that, everyone's situation will be different based off the occurrences in their life. We live in a progressive world where if people with physical disabilities need help they can seek it, that same amount of attention should be given to those going through a mental battle by themselves. A lot of people react in different ways, in order to create a change this discussion needs to be raised through dialogue and spreading awareness.

I care about mental health because I know that in a world where people have faced individual struggles it’s possible to come across life situations that can take an emotion toll on oneself. Those that struggle with mental health can be at risk for depression and even suicide. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, unfortunately in most instances people give up and the worse part of it all is how it goes unexpected from others. I personally know of someone who went through this and caught everyone by surprise. According to the statistics by the American Foundation for Suicide prevention, when it comes to suicide there are different rate differences depending on demographic characteristics, age, gender, ethnicity, and race. Nonetheless, suicide occurs in all demographic groups and it can happen to anyone. It is not a character flaw, it does not identify anyone, and it is very common.

"I think at some point everyone deals with mental issues but we suppress it because of this stigma of mental illness. Mental health awareness is important because the more it’s explained the more it helps break down mental health stigmas like people thinking that if you have a mental issue you’re “crazy” cause there’s so much more to it than that."

Mary Perez

"Anything can trigger mental instability. Death, breakup, a sudden change, and identity change as well. Rejection. Or it's simple disorders that people do have. Aka OCD, bipolar. So talking about mental health without the stigma is important and dismantling the idea that we need to have our shit together all the time is important. We can break down we can also go a little crazy. That's okay because we can also heal"

Janee Henry

"Mental Health awareness is important because people should be aware about how others behavior and energy affect them in a long way and how it can stay with them forevaa"

Katherine Thompson

Mental health awareness is important because surprisingly many people struggle with low self esteem, depression, and stress can consume a persons well being. So many people are afraid to ask for help because they feel embarrassed. The thought of bringing up an issue with ones own mental health can seem embarrassing because automatically someone else can assume that this person is not in their right mind. I've dealt with this in the past and I took the time to talk to a counselor about personal problems anyways to fix them. I also do have friends that struggle with mental health and it has taken them time to be comfortable with accepting it and discussing it with professionals.

Paul Samuels

"Mental health is important and often overlooked, people are often ashamed to ask for help because they fear being shaded and looked down by others. If more people paid attention to others mental health then maybe we wouldn't have so many recent ongoing tragedies example the last Vegas shooting. I haven't dealt with and mental health issues but as a health care provider I often communicate with those who do suffer and the main reason they often never ask for help is the fear of being shamed."

Reflection
Mental health is crucial to our survival. I think a lot of the struggle is within ourselves, it is loneliness when we feel like no one comprehends us. It is important to keep a balanced mental health by practicing small things like breath control or reminding yourself of little accomplishments. It is so easy for us to cope with various other things instead of handling our issues. That also is associated with rejection and the idea that our feelings and thoughts might be wrong, or too much too handle and we will be labeled "crazy". I think society is becoming more accepting and willing to help those in need than in the past. Mental health should not be seen as a disability, we as society need to learn how to adapt and construct our way of thinking to more positive outlooks.

Animal Cruelty

Animal Cruelty

Social issue

One of the social issues that is important to me is animal cruelty. This social issue is important to me because as an animal lover it's awful to know that millions of innocent animals are being tortured and mistreated by human kind everyday and yet nothing has been done. Many people don’t know that animals are just like humans, they feel pain and have feelings but yet many people just see them as useless animals. There are cold hearted human beings around the world that use animals as entertainment such as in the circus. They hit them or whip the animals just so that they can get their routine correctly and if they don’t, they will be badly mistreated. Not only animals are being used in circuses but as well as dog fighting and cock fighting. These animals aren't here to entertain us, they are here to have a good living but some humans tend to destroy that. Some of the ways that humans like to abuse animals is when they let them starve to death, live in terrible conditions or even putting them in small cages where they aren't able to move as much. No matter of the size of the animals, they are still being abused. Many people would say that all animals are savages, they'll start attacking and get upset. Yes, they attack and get upset but only because we are mistreating them and they try to find a way to defend themselves from harm. This social issue would be relevant to my community because I know many people that are pet owners and/or animal lovers and I know for a fact that they wouldn’t want to see their animals or any other animal getting tortured in any way. And if we don’t do something about this social issue, then the animal population will soon die from the abuse that humans are causing. We should realize that animals live in the same world as human beings, and we should share that with them and make them feel like they are home and safe. But human beings make it hard for animals to feel safe in this world. And it makes it harder for the animals to trust us. We should learn better and respect what's in the world, no matter if it's an animal or a person.

Research on my social issue
Many people may think that animal cruelty is not issue and that we shouldn’t make a big deal out of it but they should know that animal cruelty happens everywhere and everyday just like violence against people. People need to realize that animal and human violence are almost similar to each other. Both humans and animals express feelings when they are being attacked by someone or something. They both feel pain and they cry for help when facing a terrible situation. But yet most cases of human violence are reported more than animal violence. As human beings, we have to remember that these animals are helpless and aren’t able to defend themselves when facing a situation. These living animals came to his world to receive love and comfort, they didn’t come to this world so that humans can torture or kill them whenever they feel like it. “According to The Human Society of the United States, 70.1 percent abuse victims are dogs, 20.9 percent are cats, and 24.1 percent are other animals”(McCord, 2016). We see that dogs are the most common animals that are being abused. Some of the ways that dogs are abused are when humans use them as entertainment. For example, dogs are involved in dog fights which involves dogs attacking each other in a aggressive way. Humans use dogs fights just to entertain themselves or in a way to bet each other to see who’s dogs would last the longest during a fight. Every animal is used in some way of entertainment or are hated by humans which both lead to abuse. Another way how animals are abused, most specifically cats and dogs, is when they tend to walk across the street, and when a car is heading towards them, there's a chance that the car will run them over. One of the mistake that drivers tend to do is, that when they see a dog or a cat crossing the street, they keep driving and head towards their direction rather than trying to avoid them from getting run over. Some drivers don't care if they get killed in the middle of the street. We don't often see drivers trying to rescue a dog or cat and that's what we need. We need more animals to be rescued and have a home where they feel safe. The percentages of cats and dogs do make sense especially in our community because we often see a lot of cats and dogs getting hurt by their own owners or off the streets. Not only we see these incidents in person but as well as we hear it in the news. We hear a lot about how hunters love to hunt animals and they kill them as a way as an "award" for themselves and it affects the animals from going extinct, depending what animal they kill. And once we let these hunters kill these animals, their won't be anymore animals. These statistics shows that how all kinds of animals are getting tortured and mistreated for invalid, ridiculous reasons. And as human beings we should try to make the numbers decrease before it’s too late for the animal population.

Humans don’t realize that if we become more abusive towards these animals and if the numbers continue to increase "The animal population will soon die from all the abuse us humans are causing”(Angstadt, 2016). The community should be affected by this social issue because these precious animals will all soon disappear if we don’t stop animal cruelty. Some people may not think of it this way, but animals can make people happy and bring us comfort. When we feel down or just had a bad day, animals are able to cheer us up. They are here to make us feel better, be our friend, protect us and even to keep us company when we are alone. This social issue is important because there are cold hearted human beings around the world that are hurting animals everyday and yet no one is doing anything about it to stop it. We should ask ourselves that as humans, we are afraid when, where and how we are going to die, shouldn’t we think that’s how animals feel as well? Every animal has that fear about death and they are afraid that one day they are going to get hurt or get killed by someone or something just like how we are afraid of death. No animal should deserve so much hate just because human beings think they are not intelligent as humans. But we are wrong, these animals are intelligent in their own way. Not only they are able to protect their own kind but they are able to protect us from danger. Why do you think there are pet owners that have dogs? To protect us from any harm, especially when they sense that a burglar is trying to break into the house. Not only that but animals are able to sense if a person is an animal lover or not. We would be surprise how smart these animals are in their own way that we can't understand. These animals are able to do things that humans can't do. Some animals are strong, some animals are fast, some animals are able to fly and some animals are able to hear far distance. They have these specials gifts that they are able to use in life but as humans we are taking away their gifts by torturing them.

What can we do to stop Animal Cruelty?

                                                            ➣Be a role model
                                                   ➣Be a responsible pet owner
                                                           ➣ Keep a lookout
➣Volunteer in a animal or farm shelter
                                                    ➣Stop cruelty before it begins
                                                             ➣Get the word out

Personal Statement

This social issue relevant to me because as an animal lover, it breaks my heart when I hear that these poor animals are tortured and killed everyday. These living creatures may not have a voice to speak for themselves and we may not understand how they feel at times but as human beings we should speak for them and fight for their rights. It makes me ask the question to the people who abuse animals, what’s the reason they torture animals? Is it because people feel unhappy? Is it because they feel anger towards them? Or is it because they feel that there is no purpose of welcoming animals into this world? Whatever it is, they shouldn’t express their anger or hatred towards these animals. These people are cruel and have no heart towards these animals. What if things were the other way around meaning animals had a life of a human and humans had a life of an animal. Then humans are able to understand and experience the pain and the sadness animals go through everyday. As a pet owner, it affects me because I had a dog that I consider to be a close friend, always kept me company and protected me and it would be sad to see if I was a pet owner that mistreated my own dog for not reason. I chose this social issue because many people don’t give enough love towards these animals and people rather give love towards themselves. Many don’t realize how many people are affected when they hear in the news that a hunter has killed an elephant just to get the elephant’s trunks as a reward or how people killed a wolf just so that they could cut off its fur to make a fur coat. All of these signs are considered to be animal cruelty and this is not okay. What we should do instead is give love, comfort and adopt them. All of these will give so much comfort to the animals and they wouldn’t have to be afraid of us and they are able to rely on us no matter what. We just have to work together and stop animal cruelty because one day we can stop this and make a difference for them.

Q:" What do you think about animal cruelty?"

A: "Animal cruelty is very wrong not only for the animals but also for the society as a whole. We already know what the beauty product experiments do on the animals but also we are allowing society to be taught that animal cruelty is okay and normal. Society has gotten so used to animal cruelty that when an average high school student learns about it in high school they don't care about it."

Q: "How do you feel about animal cruelty?"

A:"Animal cruelty has to be one of the worst things that can happen. Animals do not deserve to be tortured or treated harshly."

Q: "What are your thoughts about animal cruelty?"

A: "I think animal cruelty is wrong because, like humans, animals feel pain. I think they do not deserve maltreatment when most of the time they are brought into close contact with humans by humans. There is no justification for animal cruelty, especially when humans are the reason behind animal attacks since they continually invade their habits."

Drug Abuse & Addiction

🚫Drug Abuse & Addiction🚫

Encouraging acceptance for a step forward.

Drug abuse and addiction is an issue that severely affects many individuals. According to The National Institute on Drug Abuse, substances that are commonly abused is tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs, and prescription opioids. Moreover, drug abuse is also associated with crime. The National Institute on Drugs also report that the cost of drug abuse in the United State is approximately $760 billion dollars. The cost mainly goes towards crime, lost work productivity, and health care. Some of the crimes include, drug possession, theft, and other criminal offenses. Crimes like these can negatively impact the safety of a community and the life of the individual.

Most research indicate the drug addiction can lead to brain disease. According to the National Council On Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) and Volkow et al., shocking evidence shows that the chemicals in drug substance alter and disrupt the way the brain communicates. Typically, messages are transferred from one neuron to another neurons through electrical impulses. After a neuron sends an impulse, it will reach the end of the neuron called the axon and it will release a chemical called the neurotransmitter. The neuron will then release neurotransmitters into the synapse which is the gap between neurons.

Unfortunately many drugs can overstimulate or fool the brain and over time, the brain will stop producing a chemical called dopamine. Furthermore, dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is in charge of the our reward system that deals with emotion, motivation, feelings of pleasure, and motor movements. With over stimulation of dopamine, the brain will eventually stop producing the neurotransmitter and when that happens, the individual will feel the need to uptake the dosage to feel high. In the end, the increase of dosage will lead to higher risk for over dosages that will likely lead to death.

The illustration below shows the process of neurons sending and receiving a message.

Why is this issue important to me?

This issue has directly impacted me in a negative way. It nearly ruined my college plans and it almost ruined my already dysfunctional family. For years, my family suspected that my father was under the influence of harsh drugs. One day, my mom confirmed her suspicions. As she was loading his pants into the washer, a small zip-lock baggie containing a white substance fell out onto the floor. We can only assume it was cocaine. When my mom confronted him about it, he denied it. One night, his hallucination went beyond what I have ever seen. So that night, I get a phone call from my mother crying and screaming for me to get home. As I walk in, my father is holding a knife and was saying words that I could not understand. It was nonsense. His face had a paranoid look. I convinced my mother to leave the house and we drove to a relative's house. Luckily, no one was hurt.

Two years after the incident, my father seems to be stable but for a while he kept denying he had a problem. Fortunately, he finally surrendered and sought professional help. All the incidents that occurred has taught me that people who are battling addiction should be encouraged to move forward and not shamed for their mistakes.

For this civic engagement project, I sought people in the community to see if they ever had similar experience as my own or if they know of someone who was battling drug addiction. I interviewed three young males. All three stories were different and unique in their own way.

Eric

"Be more emotionally intelligent. You should be able to notice if someone is different. Ask people what's wrong."

A couple years ago, Eric found himself addicted to nicotine. Many people refuse to recognize that vaping is just as addicting as smoking cigarettes. Eric disclosed that he used to be extremely anxious and had uncontrollable adrenaline. A way to calm his anxiety, Eric would automatically reach for his vape. One day, his ex-girlfriend found his vape and offered him help. His ex-girlfriend encouraged him to call her whenever he felt anxious so that they can talk about it. Eric agrees that there should be more awareness about drug addiction but above all, Eric states that people should be encouraged to accept that they have an addiction and willing to open up about the situation.

Jessie

In high school, Jessie knew a young woman who was introduced to cocaine by her mother. Though Jessie kept his distance from the girl, he still felt like guilty and wanted to provide help. Jessie later learned that the girl's mother was diagnosed with cancer and the mother stopped using the substance. Despite the mother's new actions, the young woman continued to seek the drug. Eventually, according to Jessie, the young woman received professional help. Moreover,  although Jessie was not directly affected by drug addiction, he still suggests that there should be more educational classes from people that are recovering from addiction.

Curtis

"People with closer relationships should express how they feel. Let the struggling individual know that there is help available when they need it."

Curtis had a friend that had an alcohol consumption problem. At first he did not think much about it because he thought it was the norm. See, Curtis served in the military and him and his friends had frequent access to alcohol. Curtis noticed that his friend had a problem because he would drink heavy liquor on his own time and would do it to the point of blacking out. This continued for a while and Curtis friend slowed down on his alcohol consumption once he had a kid. Now, it seems like Curtis's friend only drinks during his leisure time. Fortunately, Curtis's friend was able to accomplish less alcohol consumption on his own.

My Reflection

Going out into the community taught me that civic engagement is more than volunteering in the community. It can be a simple as addressing an issue and advocating for the issue. Although I only was able to get three responses, I was surprised that all three had a different story with different substances.

Fortunately, I did not face any problem in the community because I was cautious with my words. I know this can be a sensitive topic for many individuals which is why I approached them in a soft and friendly manner. Something I did not expect to hear was addiction to vaping. The reason I was surprised was because I was once told that vaping was safer than cigarettes but it turns out, it can also be addicting.

If I could redo this assignment, I would definitely approach an older crowd. I would do this because I am curious to know what are their points of views.

I feel like I succeeded with this project because I was not expecting for people to disclose such a sensitive topic. I also feel like this will affect my community because I am adding my story and experiences. I hope that my story could resonate with others and people can learn of more reasons to prevent drug abuse and addiction.

Again, I want people to know that there are other ways to cope with problems. Also, I hope more people can own up to their problem and accept that they need help. Encouraging acceptance can be the first step out of many to move forward.

Obesity as a Public Health Issue
The term "obesity" express body fat and usually is based on body mass index (BMI). Fat cells, adipose tissue are involved and promote inflammation and increased levels of circulation for fatty acids. Obesity is considered as a disease and affects to more people especially adult population of the United States. The reason obesity includes as a disease because obesity settles individuals at risk for many chronic healthsituation like respiratory conditions, high cholesterol, hypertension, stress incontinence and sleep apnea. However, these chronic health conditions are not the end and follow with sever diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and heart failure, fatty liver disease and numerous cancers. Now obesity like an issue is getting to be epidemic not only in the United States but throughout the world, and has its negative effect on whole populations on the world so it could categorize as a trigger for public health. According to the Buckle, Peter “public health has been defined as the science and art of prevention disease, promoting life and promoting health through …….public and private, communities and individuals” which is a great explanation. His seek shows the impact of obesity on public health by an ergonomics approach. This research overview shows health concerns which illustrate an increasingly obese workforce. The increase range of obesity in the population generally and the workforce in particular provides research which waist money and time for equipment design (for obese), attitudes of workplace colleagues, design guidance, change of working hours and regulations. Not only obesity influences adults but effects to children too. According to Trudnak childhood obesity is a major public health problem that is the focus of many child health programs and policies throughout the nation. The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased over few years. It is idea that the main cause of obesity is by imbalance between calorie intake and calories utilized. However, there are one or more factors like genetic, behavioral, and environmental cause obesity in children. Certainly, there are physical, psychological, and social health problems caused due to childhood obesity. However, it can be difficult for children and parents to make healthy food choices and get enough physical activity when they are exposed to environment that so not support healthy habits. Places such as child care centers, schools, or communities can affect diet and activity through the foods and drinks they offer and the opportunities for physical activity they provide. Obviously, children who have obesity are more likely to become adults with obesity. Consequently, adult obesity is associated with increased risk of a number of serious health have obesity, their obesity and disease risk factors in adulthood are likely to be more severe. Kraak explains globally, 1.6 billion adults are overweight and 400 million are obese. He continues at least 155 million school-aged children are overweight or obese and 20 million children younger than the age of 5 years are overweight. According to his search for the first time in history, global overweight levels are higher than the 1.02 billion people who are hungry and undernourished worldwide.
There are different kinds of things that affect one’s social life. One of these things is obesity. Moreover, human beings are social animals, and the tenor of our social life is one of the most important influences on our mental health. Without positive, durable relationships, both our minds and our bodies fall apart. Obesity research shows that being overweight is connected to mental health and body image issues. The emotional and mental health issues caused by being overweight include social discrimination, low self-esteem, and even thoughts of ending life. Obese women and men are less physically active because it's not only more difficult to move around, it's embarrassing to change in the locker rooms at the gym. Many obese people don't feel comfortable in fitness classes because of their size and shape. This lack of physical activity can cause depression and anxiety. Therefore, Obesity increases the risk that people and especially young children will become socially isolated. And being isolated will make other problems in people’s social adjustment, activity engagement, goal direction and self-confidence. Sometimes become socially isolated plus anxiety is elements which effects on child’s self-esteem and development and functioning of social life. Self-esteem serves a crucial function to developing children’s health and behavior. While high self-esteem is often associated with a mood of cheerfulness, feelings of optimism, and relatively high energy. Many experts agree that obesity is one of the most pressing health problems facing our nation today. Children who are obese also endure negative attention in the forms of teasing, rejection, and harsh treatment that also contribute to the reduction of their self-esteem. As I told previously, low self-esteem affects many areas of life including relationships, performance in school and work, social interactions, and the ability to set and work toward goals.  Children who are unable to achieve a positive self-image are at-risk for depression, withdrawal, and fear of social interaction. Furthermore, these children encounter problems related to academics, learning, and school involvement. Understanding the factors related to self-esteem and what affects it will assist parents, educators, and child advocates in ensuring success and happiness for all children.
Also, obese people get fewer promotions in their job and are more likely to be fired, suspended, or demoted because of their weight. Furthermore, weight-based teasing can also make individuals engage in unhealthy eating patterns and unhealthy weight control practices which can cause other medical conditions. All of these effects have very real impacts on a person’s overall mental and physical health. How has my understanding of civic engagement changed by participating in this assignment was when for first time I hear about civic engagement I didn’t have any clue about the definition of this word. Thus the assignment was finding two descriptions about civic engagement. I did it; however, the meaning became more touchable when for few weak I worked for civic engagement as a project. It was so interesting to analysis a social issue and see why that is a problem for public and social life. I get chance to feel and realize why for example obesity could be a case not only for me but for society where living in. I knew what on a very simple level; weight depends on the number of calories we consume, how many of those calories we store, and how many we burn up.But I didn’t know each of these factors is influenced by a combination of genes and environment. Also I didn’t know 1.6 billion adults are overweight and 400 million are obese or least 155 million school-aged children are overweight and obese also 20 million children younger than the age of 5 years are overweight (Kraak, 2009). These numbers are huge and cause to think what the main reason of the obesity is. Recently, most of people like our friends and family members believe that obesity is a complex health issue and makes serious concern because it is associated with poorer mental health outcomes, reduced quality of life, and the leading causes of death in the U.S. and worldwide, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.  Certainly, all of these factors can create other issues which will reflect to social life too. Yes, my friend Karineh believes that since each one of us is a representative of public, so everyone’s health surely effects on public, so the healthier we are the more healthie society we society will have, therefore. If we try to make an investment on public’s health, by acknowledging them to healthy eating and doing sports. These would lead us to have a healthy public.  Working of this project helped not only to me but to my friends and family members to think serious what we are eating and how. Taking care of your emotional and mental health is one of the best things you can do for your body and life!

Since  each one of us is a representative of public, so everyone’s health surely effects on public, So the more healthier we are the more healthier society we are the more healthier society we will have, therefore. If we try to make an investment on public’s health, by acknowledging them to healthy eating and doing sports. These would lead us to have a healthy public.

We can see all these are about the effect of obesity on individuals as an adult and children. Whereas individuals are part of social and if obesity can effect to individuals so can effects to their social life too.  For instance, obese people are more prone to being bullied, humiliated or ostracized. They are also more likely to engage in bullying behavior. Obesity may also take an emotional injury, as some may experience depression, feelings of social isolation, discrimination and an overall lower quality of life.

PROS AND CONS WITH BIRTH CONTROL

Okay having babies is a wonderful thing embraced by many women; however, having an unplanned one is not so nice and make you miserable if its unexpected. It is good to have an option of avoiding that, contraceptive methods can hold the pregnancy till the time is right. Thanks to John Rock, who was the first man to ever invent the birth control pill, we have the option of waiting until we are ready.

Does it actually WORK?

Even though this sounds like a wonderful idea, there are major health risks to receiving any form of contraceptive. Even though your Gynecologist does not mention it, no birth control is truly safe and that is why it says 99% accurate in the majority of them.☹️

WHEN did people started using it?

The first form of birth control came in the form a pill and was approved by the FDA in 1960.The pill was said to be the safest form of birth control because it was safe and said to be a natural form of birth control. John Rock was a well know man around the community.
