Welcome to the ART 3170 blog created as part of the civic engagement requirement of this course. In this blog, students will identify a major social issue that affects them and their communities. After conducting brief research on the issue and sharing their personal feelings, students will locate members of their communities who are also affected by the same social issue.

Depression Among Teenagers

REVIEW
Depression is a constant feeling of sadness and loss of interest, there are different types of depression. depression is usually caused by multiple events that eventually pile up.
WHY DOES THIS TOPIC MATTER TO ME?
The topic of depression matters to me because I feel like it is a topic that should be talked more about since it is usually brushed off because it's usually said that depression is only for people, but it's not it's actually an illness.
HOW DOES THIS AFFECT MY COMMUNITY?
"Unaddressed mental health problems can have a negative influence on homelessness, poverty, employment, safety, and the local economy. They may impact the productivity of local businesses and health care costs, impede the ability of children and youth to succeed in school, and lead to family and community disruption."
SIGNS OF DEPRESSION
Low energy
Feeling sad all the time
Thoughts of self harm and suicide
Change in eating behavior
Sleep change
Starts to drink alcohol or other forms of drug
Anger / Easily triggered

1. Have you ever or anyone you know has been depressed before?
"Yes, I have personally been through it"
"Yes"
"I have gotten depressed before because I never felt like I wasn't enough for anyone and didn’t know what to do. I have also seen a couple of friends get depressed with the same reason and sometimes even worse."
2. How do you know think depression affects people?
"Depression affects people in many ways. It can be mild to severe. Many can be so damage they start hurting themselves"
"In anything that has to do with school or work"
"Depression can affect people differently. it makes them feel helpless and feel like they have nothing to live for depending on the situation."
3. Do you know anyone who has ended their life because of depression
"No, I personally don't"
"No"
"I do not know anyone who ended their life. But I know I once had a thought about wanting to end my life."
4. How do you think people with depression can feel better?
"There are a couple of ways to help someone feel better if they were diagnosed with depression, one can be having a ESA, being on meds or taking therapy. But, I do believe that no matter what a person does to get better, if they don't want to get better then they won't."

"I think people with depression can get better because everything takes time to heal from."
5. Do you think depression gets in the way of education and daily life?
"Yes, Depression does get in the way of people from doing simple things as taking care of themselves to things that matter a lot like their education or their job"
"Yes it does"
" Depression does get in the way of education. It affects you a lot because all you think about is the situation and you are unable to focus in education when you are depressed."
