Air Pollution and your health

Air Pollution in California

by Yarely De Santiago Vazquez

Air pollution has been around for hundreds of years, and it is still going to this day. In case you, didn't know the term "air pollution" describes the discharge of contaminants into the atmosphere that are harmful to both human health and the environment. There are different types of air pollution, and those are indoor and outdoor air pollution. Examples of indoor air pollution are tobacco products, household cleaning products, and fuel-burning combustion appliances. While bushfires, powerplants, and motor vehicles are examples of outdoor air pollution. The common air pollutants are particulate matter(PM10 & Pm2.5), ozone (o3), Nitrogen dioxide(NO2), Carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide(SO2). In LA (Los Angeles) they have received the worst grade for air quality in the national report. According to L.A. Times "98 percent Californians live in communities, with unhealthy levels of smog or fine particles."Now there are many sources where air pollution comes from. Those are mobile, stationary, area, and natural resources.
Mobile sources: cars, buses, planes trucks, and train
Stationary Sources: boilers, eletctric power plants, and factories
Area Sources: Cities, gas stations, autobody shops
Natural sources: Wildfires, Volcanic Eruption, Radiation Fall-out

Towards the southside of California such as Los Angeles, San Bernadino, Riverside, and Inyo have experienced the worst unhealthy ozone days. Between the lowest 12 days to the highest 177 days. The increase in air pollution will cause huge problems in the environment and also our health. It affects the environment, less crops and plant growth. According to a website article called UCAR Center for Science Education, state that "Ozone pollution harms plants by damaging the structures stomata, which are tiny pores on the underside of leaves that allow plants to breathe." Three oxygen atoms make up the highly reactive gas known as ozone (O3). It is a natural and man-made substance that occurs in the Earth's high atmosphere. Additionally, it can cause acid rain from the fuels that the elements sulfur and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. Another thing is that it increases hotter weather.

It affects our health in short-term and long-term problems. Short-term problems, it can be coughing, wheezing, headache, dizziness, or irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. While long terms can cause diseases. Such as cancer, stroke, lung cancer, asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), and heart disease. Every year, more than 9 million people are killed as a result of air pollution. It is worrisome to think about, especially in my community.

Where I feel like the low communities are being more affected by it, due to there being more power plants and factories. Including low-income communities, such as South Central don't have the luxury of having solar power. This is one way to the limit use of fossil fuels, carbon monoxide, and other particle properties that are being released into the atmosphere. While in higher-up areas in Beverly Hills, Malibu, Bel Air, and Hollywood you never really see it. To support my statement, APM Research Lab states that "The LADWP invested $340 million in residential solar installation, $14 million in residential energy efficiency and $5 million in residential electric vehicle incentive programs, between 1999 and 2022. However, disadvantaged communities, mostly located in the South Los Angeles, East Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley, and Harbor areas, received less of those allocations." Reading it is upsetting because we have the money and the technology to provide more eco-friendly power, not only for the safety of us human beings but for the environment. It also really makes you think about
how the United States system is treating us.

I asked 3 other adults around the same age as me.
.                         .
Alfred Henry                                        Destiny Brown.                               Roy Garcia
23 year old                                              24 year old                                      24 year old

1)Do you feel a difference in the air quality then vs now?

A "Honestly, not really but if you think about it, its probably because the air quality has always been bad and I probably gotten used to it. Living here my whole, which is kind of scary to me to think about."

D: "Not going to lie, I can't really tell a difference, but what I can say that when I was in Nebraska for college. There is a major air quality difference. Yes, there are still gas fumes, but is not even a lot compared to California.  Once I came back to the state after I graduated, it hit me so bad. It gave me a major headache"

R: "yes, nowadays I don't remember the air being this harder to breathe than I did before. "

2) What are some possible solutions, to stop, or slow down air pollution?

A: "Is Eco going Eco I'm going, Eco. Okay potentially creating an area where people who smoke can go into a dome where there's like vacuum sealed and they can like properly dispose of these smoke no probably have the smoke be absorbed to like some cotton of some sort.  Then when they leave the dome they close the door and it stays in there yeah but I like the Eco Mode no more gas no more gasoline cars. No more littering too because you drop some nasty looking on the ground that stuff can rise up christianification all up in the air balloon. Then, yeah just making sure we have a healthy clean environment we clean up after ourselves and we should all switch to Eco Vehicles eco-friendly Vehicles no more hybrids no more gas just electric all the way"

D: "To be honest it's not a cheap one it's not a cheap idea but I think it's the truth but you know electric cars instead of gas but that ain't cheap so do you think I was going to say DC do you think company should make you know electric cars more accessible to people who are barely you know are low income or just should we have all vehicles like you know public transportation stuff like that also be like electric you know but sorry like electric trains or s*** like that yeah more hyper Vehicles"

R: "There are some possible solutions to this. One is to consider is for people to be less smoking, or at least use an air filter to release the smoke to. Try to spend more time on less gas vehicles, especially personal vehicles. The use of more solar panels or even wind power. I know it can be expensive but if we want to live on this planet longer, and live longer, we should be prioritizing it."

3) what are some environmental effects, you have noticed?

A: "From what I notice is, it more dusty. I don’t know how to explain it, it feels like there is dirt in the air. It feel like the weather is pretty bad because how the hell, we had a week of just pure rain in spring?"

D: "I'm not sure if I'm the only one that noticed. But the weather lately has been pretty bad. I know California especially Los Angeles weather has always been bipolar. Even though

R:" I do notice, that there have been more natural disasters. Such as wildfires, and more smog in the area, just like when it happens in New York, where it looks like an apocalypse."

4) Is it affecting you?

A: "Yes it has been affecting me. It has been a lot harder to breathe in some areas. Where it gives me a headache and it makes me cough a lot. I have noticed there are times when I lose shortness of breath."

D: "As of right now no, but I know it will eventually. Which is something I'm very worried about because I'm doing the best I can to take care of myself. I already have other physical problems, and it is something I don't want to worry about in the future."

R: "Well, yes the air feels heavy and it is hard to breathe. Especially I have asthma, I'm scared it's gonna make it worse. I don't have health insurance so buying my own inhaler and stuff to keep me alive is expensive"

Based on these candidates we can agree that air pollution should be something we need to be worried about. For the safety of ours but also the environment. Such as our pets, our garden, trees, and mother nature itself.

Solutions to Air Pollution

1. Use of public transportation
-The use of fuel is less
- It helps with the cost of it.

2. Recycle, and Reuse
-Material reuse and recycling contribute to a reduction in atmospheric carbon emissions

3. Solar Energy
-Power plants and solar energy systems don't produce greenhouse gases or contaminate the air.
-The environment can benefit when solar energy replaces or reduces the use of other energy sources

4. Planting more Trees
-Yes it may take some years for a tree to grow its full potential, but it will provide the clean we need for our body to keep functioning
-Plants absorb carbon dioxide, which is released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned.

5. Use energy-efficient devices
-switch to fans instead of Air conditioner,
-see what doesn't consume a lot of energy

Healthcare Disparities Amongst Mexicans

Healthcare Disparities Amongst Mexicans and Mexican Americans

There has been a huge increase in healthcare systems not providing the same sources. As well as enough, or at all healthcare benefits for Mexican Americans and Immigrants as white Americans in the United States do. Low-income/poor individuals, people of color, and disabilities are the main targets for health disparities in the United States. Health disparity in definition are the differences in health outcomes that are linked to social, economic, and environmental disadvantages" (Saldana, 2023).

Why does this social issue matter to me?

This particular social issue matters to me because I have gone through similar experiences, with my mom, and my older sister as well. To add on, whenever I go to a doctor's appointment, most of the population are Mexicans who will experience little to no source of care or care utilization compared to the general non-Mexican who are white population. They will also experience delayed treatment or failure to receive treatment and access to any care" (Saldana, 2023). To make matters worse, differential treatment in healthcare providers is one of the main issues in healthcare systems which refers to how one’s treatment differs based on the healthcare system's beliefs, thoughts, and attitudes toward their patients (Saldana, 2023). Many Mexicans and immigrants are also unaware of the healthcare system and their own health due to a lack of resources in their community.

Differential treatment based on Mexican's...
1. Language barrier
2. Low-income status
3. Disability
4. Poor/Homeless living conditions
5. Immigrant/Non-citizen
6. Uneducated
7. No insurance

Members affected by healthcare disparity

Jocelyn Itzel Ramirez (34 years old): grew up traveling to Tijuana, Mexico from Los Angeles, California to receive proper healthcare benefits LA healthcare providers did not provide due to disparity and differential treatment. To this day, she now experiences differential treatment with her biracial children and only ever visits the doctors or ER for herself if it is an emergency.

Isabel Ivonne Burgos Ramirez (49 years old): had a work injury in which her right-hand index finger started to become crooked. No x-rays were done, no solution was told, and a rushed quick check-up was only done by healthcare providers. To this day, her finger became permanently crooked. A second incident also happened at work in which she was exposed to heavy toxic chemicals. Her work did not provide masks. As soon as she visited the ER after experiencing numbness on her entire face, doctors did not check up on her. Only asked her questions leading to them telling her based on her answers that she was ok and was sent back home.

Solutions to Healthcare Disparities

Healthcare disparities go beyond people receiving no medical attention, individuals also experiencing receiving no medication, etc. It affects people's mental, emotional, and physical health, leading individuals to find solutions themselves. Sometimes individuals go in living their lives while affected. healthcare disparities cause severe distress and create a society of individuals mistrusting the healthcare system. There have many cases of deaths in which people would rather not receive any medical attention because of money issues, discrimination, etc. For solutions, "it is important to research and understands healthcare disparities for future outcomes because it can help many immigrants and Mexican-Americans, families, and more" (Saldana, 2023). Raising awareness through education can also help address health equity. Improving resource coordination can be beneficial for individuals experiencing improper care due to health disparities and or providers.

Illiteracy in Late Elementary Students After Covid-19

Backstory

During early Covid-19, most, if not all, schools shut down and turn their way to online learning. However, while online learning may have worked for older students, middle school and high school, it was not useful for younger elementary kids.
Online learning is difficult to monitor kids and making sure they are paying attention and learning. Now current 4th and 5th grade students stuggle to learn efficiently, which then hinders their ability to simply read and write. If you do the math, these students had to do thier preschool, kindergarten, and first grade years online. This is unfortunate due to these grades being the foundation years for students in order to learn how to learn.

Personal Stories (Why it Matters)

My Story

I am aware of this situation solely because I work with students in elementary school. I am an after-school tutor, therefore I help kids on their homework, and push them to learn more. I especially work close with 4th and 5th grade students with some kindergarteners.
Sometimes these students would have writing for their homework, however they stuggle to write at their own level. Their sentences are basic kindergarten sentences, and they fail to write grammatically correct. They also lack detail in their writing and the ability to spell. You can see the effects of online learning to these 4th and 5th graders if you compare their writing to 3rd and 6th graders. There is a substaintial difference in their English foundation.
There will be times where I will give them simple journal writing assignments, and their goal is to only write 10 sentences about their breaks or what they did over the weekend, and unfortunately they still fail. Some will say "10 setences is too much" or "how do I write 10 setences about what I did?". It is truly mind boggling when I explain to them that they need to write details about what they did and not just "I went to the beach" but they sadly still do not understand. It is frightening to see this level of illiteracy in students who are supposed to be our future.

Other Stories

Kendrick Cheng, 28

"As the director of Connected Academy, I believe literacy is the cornerstone of a child's educational journey, empowering them to navigate and excel in an ever-changing world."

As the director of a tutoring program, Kendrick also sees firsthand of these students struggling with reading and writing. As said in his quote above, literacy is essential for students to succeed in the world.

Uyen Nguyen, 22

Uyen has worked with students over many years, pre and post covid, and she has brought to light that this level of illiteracy only appeared after COVID-19 and online learning.

Adelyn Chan, 21

Adelyn has worked as a summer school teacher and works with students from first to sixth grade. She is aware of the issue of illiteracy among these students. Adelyn agrees that it is more prominent now then it was before COVID. She explains that before COVID it is understandable that students may not understand some stuff, but it is not normal for students to not understand anything at all.

Solutions

To solve this problem, everyone in the students' lives needs to be involved. It is not just on their teachers to teach them, but also the parents to help build learning habits and practice. Teachers must realize that students are behind in learning and cannot push new things to learn when they have not mastered another thing (Poletti 2020). Schools need to connect with parents and give them resources to help them outside of school hours (Bozan 2022).
Students need to start from the basics to fully understand and grasp knowledge to overcome this level of illiteracy and succeed in life.

Empowering Communities: Refinery Pollution - Jasmin Canales

In our communities how can involvement and social activism, all have the hidden meaning of "civic engagement". But what does it truly mean? Is it simply about volunteering? Or does it have a different meaning?

Civic engagement, as defined by a few sources, means that it is a wide range of actions focused on finding and solving public issues. It includes many different activities, like volunteering and working together to solve community problems. It goes beyond just learning through service and involves getting involved in organizations and politics. Ultimately, it's about giving people the power to make a difference in their community.

Living in Wilmington, CA, near one of the biggest ports in the U.S., makes it clear how important civic involvement is. Our area faces challenges from industry, especially with air and water pollution from the many refineries. Despite all of the benefits, these refineries can affect our health and environment.

Personally, the impact hits close to home. The inhalation of polluted air has compromised many of our respiratory health, while it also causes water contamination and threatens our drinking water. I have witnessed family members who have started to have respiratory problems due to this situation and highlights the urgent need for a change.

One family member that hurts me the most affected by this is my mom's best friend. She has a smile that illuminates all and due to the air quality, she was diagnosed with cancer. Her doctors informed her that this was due to all the toxins in the air. This really opened my eyes that we need to make a change. It enraged me that our community

council doesn’t see the bigger problem with our refineries.  It started to make me wonder how many other people have been affected in the same way.

Other people in the community feel the same way:

“Polluted Wilmington, Having been born and raised in Wilmington, CA we were brought up believing the refineries actually cared for our communities considering the “donations” they’d make to our schools and community by building parks and what not. As time passed we began to realize the truth, they made those donations in order to keep us quite meanwhile behind the scenes doctors found that more and more residents were developing asthma and other respiratory issues as well as the workers getting cancer for being exposed to such conditions. It’s a love hate relationship for our city considering they do employ a lot of people here which means they do put food on a lot of our tables.  With the level of corruption it is hard to believe anything that comes out of their mouths because even if they hire people to quote unquote regulate them, that doesn’t mean they’re going to be truthful. What needs to be done is 3 party regulation, no company should be allowed to regulate themselves because that means they can pick and choose rather than actually be held accountable.” written by Luis Hernandez, 28 years old

“Since I can remember refinery pollution has been part of my life.  Living  near or around over 15 refinery you can only imagine how much pollution I been around.  Growing I always struggled with asthma and difficulties breathing. I always assumed the reason for my miss fortunes were due to natural causes, but upon reflecting and doing my own research and the causes of asthma, I have learned that one of the main causes of asthma and difficulty breathing are refinery pollutions and harmful chemicals in the air due to the pollution. I know the world isn’t perfect and a lot of people are facing same issue with their heath due to the refinery pollution all around us. I just wish there was a better way to control what they put out in the air. Or even a way they can filter everything that comes out of all the refineries around us.  I know I’m not the only one who faces this issues and won’t be the last but I wished their was a more eco friendly way for refineries to control what comes out and what they out into the air for not only my sake but all the children around us.” written by Jorge Cabrallo, 29 years old

“Refinery pollution is a big deal because it can directly impact your health and the environment around you. I worry about the air quality on a day-to-day basis since pollutants from refineries can contribute to smog and respiratory issues. Plus, it's not just about the air; water and soil can also get contaminated, affecting everything from local parks to the food grown in the area. It's a concern for the community's well-being and the future of the neighborhood. It's super important to stay informed and support measures that reduce pollution for a cleaner and safer Wilmington ! “ written by Marco Castaneda, 22 years old

"Pollution is not just a threat to our environment; it's an assault on the very fabric of our existence. As we poison our air, soil, and water, we suffocate the planet's ability to sustain life. It's time to clear the skies, cleanse the waters, and restore harmony to our shared home." written by Matthew Escobar, 27 years old

"Pollution is a big concern for me. I am a mother 2 a one year old and constant flairs is a big concern too me. I have family that are refinery workers, but even then I don't think its safe foe me and my family. " written by Natalie Bedolla, 20 years old

Unraveling the Emotional Tapestry of Social Media

The Significance of Drug Addiction - Angel Cruz

What is Drug Abuse/Addiction:

Drug abuse/drug addiction is continuous, compulsive use of substances without concern over the harmful consequences it could lead to. It is defined as not being able to control or resist drug use despite any negative effects on physical health, mental health, relationships, and overall functioning. Drug abuse could involve the abuse of both legal and illegal substances such as alcohol, prescription medication, and illicit drugs like heroin or ketamine. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), addiction is a complex disease that involves physical dependence, psychological cravings, and behavioral patterns that prioritize any drug use over other parts of life.

Why is Drug Addiction a significant issue that needs to be addressed:

This is a significant social issue that needs attention because drug abuse and addiction have various consequences on individuals, families, and communities. Drug abuse leads to health issues including overdosing, other diseases, and mental health disorders. Secondly, it strains relationships and negatively impacts families, often leading to neglect, violence, and financial troubles. It also leads to crime and social conflict, due to individuals resorting towards illegal activities to continue with their addiction, Addressing the issue is key to promoting good health, safety, and social unity, as well as supporting individuals in overcoming addiction and rebuilding their lives.

  • According to NIDA, substance abuse and addiction are significant public health concerns in the United States, with an estimated 20.4 million Americans aged 12 or older having a substance use disorder in 2019
  • SAMHSA reports that in 2021, over 80,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States, the highest number ever recorded.
Personal Significance:

Drug abuse is a severe issue that has impacted me as I have witnessed its damaging outcomes directly within my own community. I have seen several members of the community struggle with addiction, leading to unhealthy relationships, financial instability, and emotional chaos. These experiences have left a lasting impact on me, shaping my understanding of the complications of addiction, and increasing my desire to raise awareness. I chose to address drug abuse because of the negative impact it can have on individuals, families, and communities. It is a universal issue that has no boundaries, affecting people from all walks of life. By shining a light on this issue, I hope to inspire action towards addressing the root causes of addiction and supporting those in need of help.

Interviews:
