Every year thousands of people make a visit to Planned Parenthood whether its for contraception, STD checks, or a breast exam. According to Planned Parenthoods annual reports, within just last year they had about 2.5 million patients through out the 661 locations across the United States. Over 45% of patients go for STD testing and treatment while another 30% go for contraception and another 7%go for cancer screening and prevention. Most of the time the center can provide all of the services listed and more for free. Due to social media and stereotypes there can be a stigma that all planned parenthood does is provide abortions however the statistics show other wise, In fact only 3% of the patients out of the 2.5 million go for an abortion. In order to provide such services they receive funding from all types of organizations but the most coming from government "The government funds about 500 million dollars for planned parenthood" (www.npr.org). With all the services provided and the receiving funds there are some who don't think their tax money should be helping to fund this place because of the abortion service but according the Huffington post they claim " There's law in which the tax payers money may not used for funding abortions. In fact a service like that comes out of planned parenthoods pockets". However there has been a constant battle in congress through out the last few years to defund it. Overall I just think its important to keep in mind that there's more than meets the when it comes to this special clinic.
Personal:
Keeping planned parenthood alive and thriving is important to me because sexual reproductive health has always been one of my interests. I've also seen plenty of friends and family, including myself end up thankful for visiting. I believe that any reproductive right is a human right. When visiting I feel safe to ask anything and tell them my concerns. I can honestly call it a safe place.
