Jacqueline Ramirez - Abortion Laws

Abortion Laws

By Jacqueline Ramirez

The social issue of abortion laws is that there should be no such thing as laws preventing women from having the choice of an abortion. This has become a worldwide social issue throughout history where women in different states are not allowed to have abortions. The social issue is that we are in the year 2020 and women's rights and own body choices are still being up for debate. Although abortions are legal in California, they are not in many other countries and states which is why this social issue matters.

The topic of abortion laws matters to me because I am a woman, and I believe that abortion laws are a form of a slippery slope situation where women will perpetually be treated unequally by society. The topic of the wage gap and high statistics of harassment towards women is completely different than abortion laws while simultaneously being similar topics because if society continues to regulate a woman right they are dehumanizing women. This being the cause of allowing others to think that gender inequality is not a social issue, as well as putting women's rights up to debate.

In 1973, the decision of Roe v. Wade protected safe legal abortions in the United States. The year 1973 was not so long ago, as well as the year 1920 when women were granted the right to vote through the 19th amendment. My argument being that abortion law is a social issue that should matter to everyone, although it essentially only affects women because the only way in which we can make a difference is by standing up for each other.

With the commence of Amy Coney Barret's new position as the judge of the supreme court Roe is at risk so is all women who now have the right and resources of an abortion. It has been confirmed that Barret opposes abortions, similar to the former president Trump attempting to defund Planparenhood in which serves more than 725,000 individuals in 10 countries. The social issue of abortion laws should matter to everyone because it involves human rights being regulated based on conservative views and the only way in which we can be heard and make a difference is to stand together for our mothers, sisters, siblings and community.
